Job seekers do this too. They get blinded by "brand-named" companies or inflated salaries and don't factor in all relevant information. I subconsciously looked for information that supported my existing beliefs (of "oh, this house is really cool and near my kid's school). I was initially affected by confirmation bias. I was susceptible to psychological bias in my decision-making- I was willing to put my furniture in storage, go over budget, and sacrifice priorities (against logic) because of my emotional urgency. We were unsuccessful in purchasing a house, and our move date was quickly approaching. I approached renting a house like some of my job-seeking clients enter into a job search. I kid you not there was a HUGE nude painting directly in front of the master bed.Īmong many other things, the painting was the final straw. We did not rent the house. I was emotionally invested in this house and was ready to rent it before we even walked in the door. House was a little over our rental budget, but I justified it as a viable option because it was within walking distance to the kids' school. ![]() The pictures of the house were incredible. It was a modern house-not necessarily my style-but had breathtaking views of nature. We had a lead on a house that a university professor was renting out while he spent a year abroad. The CATCH was that the house was fully furnished, so we would have to put all of our furniture in storage. We flew into town on a weekend with eight houses lined up to view. Before our plane even touched down in Raleigh, three of the eight went under contract. We were moving from Columbus, OH, and navigating the housing market from 8-hours away was very challenging.Īfter several missed opportunities, we finally accepted that we needed to be physically in the area and that a 6-12 month rental was probably our best option.įinding a rental was no cakewalk either. When we moved to the Research Triangle of North Carolina a few years ago, the housing market was HOT.
